Apple has announced that its entire iMac line now features the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor in every model, delivering performance up to 50 percent faster than the previous iMac.
With the new Intel chips, Apple has taken the lead in the low-cost PC. One criticism that has plagued the company is that their products are more expensive than comparable Windows-based systems, but these arguments have been thoroughly refuted.
Core Duo low power consumption is the first in the world (less than 25 watt) dual-core microprocessor, with the previous low is the Opteron 260 and 860 SE of 55 watts. Core Duo was released January 5, 2006, with the other components of the platform Napa. This is the first Intel for use in Apple Macintosh products (although the Developer Transition Kit machines from Apple, the production units distributed to some Developers, using the Pentium 4).
Intel Core Duo has two cores on one die, A 2 MB L2 cache shared by both cores, and a bus arbitrator that controls both L2 cache and FSB access. Upcoming versions of the Core Duo processor also includes the ability to disable one core for save energy.
The new iMac lineup includes four models: 1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz 17-inch, 2.16 GHz 20-inch and the all-new 2.16 GHz 24-inch iMac, and has with the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor that delivers up to 50 percent faster performance than previous 20-inch iMac with the industry standard tests.
As the 17-inch and 20 inch versions, the 24-inch iMac also features 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor with speeds ranging between 1.83 and 2.33 GHz also also doubles the amount of L2 cache, the twin cores sharing 4MB between them.
